About Us
The Section on Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics is a special interest section primarily devoted to education of the generalist pediatrician. It consists of pediatricians who have a special interest in developmental, learning, and behavioral problems. The section sponsors a special session at the Annual Meeting of the Academy, as well as sponsoring continuing education sessions and workshops at both the Annual Meeting and Spring Sessions. There are about 850 members of the Section. Membership is open to all Academy Fellows.
The Section also welcomes child healthcare professionals as affiliates. Affiliates should be licensed professonals who focus on problems of development and behavior in a medical setting. Benefits include the popular Section on Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics Newsletter, subscirption to the AAP News. Section affiliates can contribute the well being of children and families through the Section's advocacy, education and clinician support programs. Affiliate membership applications are now available.
The Section is governed by an Executive Committee consisting of elected and appointed members. Support comes from general AAP membership dues and Section dues.
Activities
Major activities of the Section include
- Section Scientific Session at the AAP National Conference and Exhibition (NCE), held annually in the fall. This is a full day education session for members
- Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics Online (http://www.dbpeds.org)
- Sponsorship of general education sessions at the NCE, and other AAP conferences.
- Active participation in AAP Practical Pediatrics and SuperCME conferences
- Liaison with related AAP Committees such as the Committee on Psychosocial Aspects of Child and Adolescent Health, The Committee on Adoption, The Committee on Early Childhood, and the Section/Committee on Children with Disabilities.
- Leadership participation in AAP Councils
- Review and development of policy statements and parent education materials
- Media interviews on child health topics
- Promotion of professional practice including quality improvement and coding and reimbursement
The Section co-sponsors (with the AAP and the Society for Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics) the biannual DB-PREP course, a comprehensive review of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics.
The Section has two awards given at the Annual meeting: the C. Anderson Aldrich award and the Dale Richmond-Justin Coleman Award. The section also publishes the Developmental & Behavioral News, contributes to the Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics Homepage, and the DBP Internet mailing list.
C. Anderson Aldrich Award
The C. Anderson Aldrich Award, made possible by an educational grant from Ross Products Division Abbott Laboratories, recognizes achievement in the field of child development. This award is named for Dr. C. Anderson Aldrich, one of the founders of the American Academy of Pediatrics, whose greatest contributions were to the modern practice of infant feeding. In 1944, Dr. Aldrich founded the Rochester Child Health Institute in Rochester, Minnesota, devoted to research on the development of normal infants and children and to a program of delivering child care to an entire community. This award is generally presented at the American Academy of Pediatrics Annual Meeting.
Dale Richmond - Justin Coleman Award
The Richmond-Coleman Award recognizes achievement in the field of child development and is generally awarded to a nonphysician educator. This award is generally presented at the American Academy of Pediatrics Annual Meeting. The Richmond-Coleman Award is endowed thanks to matching funds from the Foundation for Child Development in honor of Dr. Julius Richmond, former Surgeon General of the United States and father of the Head Start program. Additional contributions were donated in memoriam for Justin Coleman, son of Section Past Chair William Coleman, M.D. FAAP.
