From the Chairby William Lord Coleman, M.D. FAAP, Chapel Hill, NCAs I conclude my two-term tenure as Chair, I want to thank many people who have contributed to the success of the Section. They include all members (now about 750, third largest in the AAP), the Executive Committee, and our Section representatives at the Academy. Special mention goes to three members. Dr. Des Kelly also serves as the Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics (DBP) representative to the Academy for the Annual Meeting and the Practical Pediatrics CME courses. Des also conducted the survey for the DBP portion of FOPE II. Dr. Jean Smith has done an excellent job as Program Chair, and the top-notch quality of our educational sessions at the Annual Meeting reflects her efforts. Dr. Hank Shapiro has made the newsletter a very informative and relevant publication. It is considered by many (outside the Section) as the best section newsletter. Hank has also taken the lead in creating the DBP Discussion List, which allows pediatricians around the country and the world to share information. Our Section has been blessed to have had 4 superb representatives at the Academy. They believe in the Section's mission, and they work long and hard, and with a very positive, upbeat spirit. Most Section members have no idea how much they work to make our Section run so well. Over my tenure, we have had the good fortune to have benefited from the endless efforts of Linda Lipinsky, Jacqueline Burke, Chelsea Dixon, and now Alicia Siston. Without them we would not be where we are. I thank them very much. The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) gave subspecialty board certification to DBP on March 18, 1999. The Society for Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics (SDBP) took the lead in developing this proposal and in working very hard with various groups for several years. Drs. John Kennel, William Carey, Curt Bennett, Mark Wolraich, Dan Coury, and Ellen Perrin were very actively involved. The American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) was very supportive: Dr. Jon Tingelstad (Immediate Past President), Dr. James Stockman (President), and the ABP Executive Committee was very supportive. Countless individuals and organizations played critical roles, e.g., 59 pediatric department chairpersons, 5 medical school deans, neurologists, child and adolescent psychiatrists, and the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Dr. Thomas Boat, Chairperson of the ABMS Committee on Certification, was extremely helpful. The Section also played a key role. Several years ago, I asked all Section members to write the ABP to support the certification process. The response was overwhelming! Over 400 members wrote letters stating that general pediatrics would benefit from certification. The ABP "heard" this voice. More recently, the ABP asked the Academy to answer 11 detailed questions about the nature of DBP. The Academy, in turn, asked me to respond on behalf of the Section and the Academy. Dr. Hannemann, then President of the Academy, signed off on my letter verbatim and sent it to the ABP as the official response of support. The Section has formed an official liaison with the Committee on Psychosocial Aspects of Child and Family Health: Dr Heidi Feldman will serve as Committee representative. I have been nominated to be the official Section representative, but this needs to be approved by an AAP committee. Other in-the-works liaison formation involves three other Committees: Children with Disabilities, Early Childhood, Adoption and Dependent Care, and Child Abuse and Neglect with Dan Kessler, Peter Gorski, and Jean Smith respectively leading the way. Dr. Karen Olness will receive the C. Anderson Aldrich Award at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday October 10. Ms. Marian Wright Edelman will receive the Dale Richmond Award at 9:30 a.m. on Monday October 11. Be sure to attend both presentations. You are in for a treat. Their biographical sketches are in the newsletter. It has been a great pleasure and honor to have served two terms as Section Chair. I
have enjoyed helping the Section in accomplishing it missions. The combined efforts of so
many made it possible. I have also enjoyed meeting pediatricians from all over the country
and knowing we all work for the health and well being of children, adolescents, and their
families. I look forward to working with all of you in the future. I have learned much,
and I am very grateful for this opportunity. |
