Section Business

The Section Executive Committee meets once a year at the Annual Meeting. 25 new Section members were approved at the 1998 meeting, and Committee members had the opportunity to review a wide range of Academy initiatives. The Academy has reorganized its departments, creating a new Department of Sections and Committees. A major goal was to improve communications between groups with similar interests and missions. The first combined meeting of these groups took place last March.

The Section Executive Committee endorsed the idea of developing formal liaison with several committees. This should allow better planning of educational programs and will strengthen the voice of the Section in making Academy policy.

Liaisons

  • Psychosocial Aspects of Child and Family Health (William Lord Coleman)
  • Early Childhood, Adoption, and Dependent Care (Peter Gorski)
  • Committee on Child Abuse & Neglect (Jean Smith)
  • Children With Disabilities (Daniel Kessler)

FOPE II

As you can see from the article in this issue, the Section has been an active participant in the Future of Pediatric Education II project (FOPE II). Dr. Des Kelly has spearheaded this effort. Other members of the committee also offered detailed responses to drafts of FOPE II, which is expected to have a large impact on pediatric training.

The report re-emphasizes the importance of biopsychosocial issues in pediatric education, and the need for all pediatricians to have core competencies in areas such as developmental problems, chronic illness, and school failure. The final recommendations are available on the Academy web site at:

One goal identified by the Executive Committee was to submit or propose articles to the AAP News. While the AAP News was not prepared to reprint our article on ADHD and the Military, I had an extensive interview with them which hopefully will become part of a future article on the issue of the role of the pediatrician in counseling children with chronic conditions about future military service. Our section chair, Dr. Bill Coleman, has been appointed to the AAP News Editorial Board. Pediatric News, an unrelated publication, had an article on Developmental Screening which nicely previews our Section program.

Other topics discussed at the Executive Committee meeting included liaison with parent groups, Early Brain Development initiatives, and our successful advocacy for sub-board certification. Thanks to Bill Coleman for his leadership, and to Alicia Siston for her invaluable assistance.   bluesquare.gif (54 bytes)
