Board Certification Update

By now, most of you are aware of the approval of a sub-board of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics. The composition of the board was not available at press time, but is likely to consist of established leaders in the field, with representatives from Psychiatry and Neurology. Until the members of the DBP board meet, the exact requirements and timeline for certification will not be firmly established.

We expect that the requirements will be along the lines of the board application, which will be posted on the SDBP web site. Sources at the SDBP say that the certifying exam will be not be offered until 2002 "at the earliest."

The exact formula for eligibility can be inferred from the experience of other subspecialties. In general, 3 years of fellowship training will be required within 5 years of approval of the subspecialty by the American Board of Medical Specialties. In the case of DBP, this would be in 2004. Currently, the American Board of Pediatrics allows that period to be shortened by up to a year based on previous research training or experience.

For those who had less than a three-year fellowship, eligibility will be based on some combination of subspecialty training, focused practice, or practice and fellowship training. However, all candidates will have to take the board examination. In addition, current board certification in General Pediatrics will be a requirement. This means that many will need to recertify.

We will continue to publish updates online. For further updates, join the DBP News email list and check the Pediatric Development and Behavior web site. We will be working with other groups on review courses as soon as the requirements have been determined. bluesquare.gif (54 bytes)
