In Memoriam: Katherine Bain, M.D.

The Section Executive Committee wishes to mark the passing of Katherine Bain, M.D. FAAP, who died on January 10, 1999 at the age of 101. Dr. Bain was a pediatrician who spent a lifetime career in government advocating for the well being and safety of children. She was instrumental in alerting the public about the dangers of childhood poisoning, and her reports led to the development of child-proof safety caps. This led to a dramatic reduction in accidental poisonings. Dr. Bain also alerted the public to keep other poisons such as kerosene out of the reach of children.

Other accomplishments included the requirement for safety releases inside refrigerators, and guidelines for childhood nutrition. Dr. Bain was an early advocate for breastfeeding.

In addition to her work in the Children’s Bureau (which became part of the Department of Health and Human Services), Dr. Bain served on the board of UNICEF. Dr. Bain was also an advocate for access to child health care, and publicized the vast disparities within the United States.

Dr. Bain left the world a better place. We are inspired by her career and example. News reports state that several nieces and nephews survive her.  bluesquare.gif (54 bytes)
