About this tutorial

Early identification and intervention for developmental and behavioral problems in childhood can make a great difference in the lives of children and families. Unfortunately, it is easy to overlook the early signs of disability, leading to delays of treatment and, in many cases, more severe impairment and family distress.

This tutorial guides you through the science and practice of screening. It highlights different conditions, and different practice styles. It identifies some of the pitfalls involved in screening.

The tutorial focuses on primary care medical practice. Screening and identification can and should happen in many settings.

How to use the tutorial

The tutorial includes a variety of brief articles on practical and theoretical aspects of developmental and behavioral screening. It is recommended that you read the Fundamentals section first, and then explore other material.

Some sections include activities that you may want to complete offline, and then go back to the web and mark that section as complete.
